When Prince William and Kate Middleton exchanged vows in April 2011, the spotlight was on Kate’s ring, made of Welsh gold, symbolizing their vows and marital union. However, keen-eyed royal watchers noticed Prince William doesn’t sport a wedding ring. The reason wasn’t simply a misplaced accessory or a style choice, it was that he never had one!

Royal Tradition Unveiled

A month before their royal wedding, St. James Palace made it clear that Prince William wouldn’t be receiving a wedding ring, citing his personal style preference. According to a palace insider, William isn’t one for jewelry and had never worn any, deciding to continue the trend even after tying the knot.

In contrast, Prince Harry does wear a wedding ring. The platinum band, presented by Meghan Markle during their 2018 vows, stands in contrast to William’s choice. Meghan, following royal tradition, received a wedding band made of Welsh gold to accompany her engagement ring.

Kate Middleton’s Sentimental Wedding Band

Royal commentator Eloise Parker shed light on the tradition, stating that it’s not customary for royal men to wear wedding rings. Both Prince Philip and Prince William have chosen not to wear them, highlighting how, with a wedding watched by millions, everyone knows you’re married. Most of the time it’s down to personal choice, just like everyone else.

Kate Middleton’s wedding band has its own story. Crafted in collaboration with the Bristol jewelry company Wartski, the ring holds sentimental value. The Welsh gold used for the ring was gifted by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Kate’s engagement ring, a diamond and sapphire sparkler, was Princess Diana’s,  creating a beautiful link to royal history. So, while Prince William chose not to wear a wedding ring, each royal couple’s choice of wedding band carries its own unique story and traditions.
